Charles LaRue Displays His Collection
Pine Rest has the pleasure of announcing artist Charles LaRue will be displaying his collection titled “Everyday Sanctuaries” in the Bruce and Mary Leep Art Gallery at the Postma Center. The display will open July 7, 2010. The Leep Art Gallery is located on the main campus of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services at 300 68th Street, Grand Rapids, MI.

LaRue’s show is titled “Everyday Sanctuaries” to signify the restorative and comforting aspects of the everyday places in everyday environments. The work is inspired by the humble, ordinary scenes that also show a more profound message through an artistic brushstroke. LaRue says, “I tried to make compositions that provide greater meaning than what one would expect from a mere transcription of a scene into paint.” “Everyday Sanctuaries” demonstrates that the sense of wonder and the profound can be experienced not only through a religious service, but also in the most humble settings.

LaRue, a southwest Michigan native, attended what is now Kendall College of Art and Design. After graduation, LaRue straddled the commercial and fine arts fence, working in both approaches. His work has been featured in numerous galleries. Throughout that time, LaRue garnered many competition awards and has had some of his work travel to various parts of the globe where they are in private, corporate and public collections.

LaRue, a longtime Pine Rest employee, kicks-off a yearlong centennial celebration by the Pine Rest Leep Art Gallery focusing on staff members and their artistic work. The next exhibit in October will encourage all staff to show how their “Healing Hands” have aided in healing moments with patients, clients and residents at Pine Rest. Hundreds of photos in “Healing Hands” will be displayed along with a description from individual staff in how they helped in the healing process. Lastly, the winter exhibit will include a display of staff members’ juried art.
